about EMDR therapy (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing)

what is the definition of EMDR therapy?
EMDR therapy is a highly effective modality used to assist in resolving issues surrounding childhood or adult trauma, relationship issues, depression, anxiety and general dissatisfaction.

is EMDR therapy right for me?

If a client reacts to a situation in the present moment in a way that is either an over-reaction (high anxiety, panic, fear, anger, sadness) or an under-reaction (shutting down, numbing, dissociating) then that means that individual has unprocessed memories from the past. The past affects the present but with EMDR therapy, it doesn’t have to anymore.

benefits of EMDR therapy:

•Increase satisfaction of interpersonal relationships
•Decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression
•Increase self-esteem and self-worth
•Decrease trauma symptoms
•Increase client’s ability to cope with life’s hardships
•Decrease self-sabotaging behaviors
•Increase positive self-talk

research proving EMDR WORKS:

  • Studies show that EMDR is an effective way to reduce or get rid of trauma symptoms completely. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, and mental health organizations worldwide use it.
  • The study also found that EMDR therapy had a lower dropout rate from participants.Several studies have found evidence that EMDR therapy is not only effective in the short term, but that its effects can be maintained long term.
  • A study compared EMDR therapy to typical prolonged exposure therapy, found that EMDR therapy was more effective in treating symptoms.
  • There have been MANY more research studies proving that it works in studies published by Neurology Neuromedicine, US National Library of Medicine, and Clinical Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is now one of the leading treatments for trauma, anxiety, depression and related disorders.

“Changing the memories that form the way we see ourselves also changes the way we view others. Therefore, our relationships, job performance, what we are willing to do or are able to resist, all move in a positive direction.”
